Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)

In order to provide a robust data networking curriculum that will bring students to an industry marketable level, we’ve developed a strong hands-on course that digs deep into the complexities of large-scale networking. This curriculum will help understand the majority of any of the current CCNA exam tracks, but since our specialty in in manufacturing technology training we do focus on the Cisco CCNA Routing and Switching, and CCNA Industrial certification exams. This course is also meant to tie in well with our new Production Electronics and Siemens Industrial PLC Automation courses.

We believe strongly in applied knowledge and would like each student to have the opportunity to complete and understand each and every lab themselves. Keeping with this vision, we always have plenty of equipment, work in groups of no more than two students, and can often make the lab available for students on off days. This helps ensure that each student will have a chance to use all the equipment and have the time to build a strong understanding of the systems. The outcome is a very hands-on course that promotes “learning by doing”, increased memory retention, and confidence in your abilities.”

You will have time in class to complete every exercise at a reasonable pace, but students should be aware that to achieve a functional understanding of the material you will need to spend a great deal of time on your own studying the systems and their configuration. Practicing on actual systems at home or in the lab is highly recommended.

Our instructor, Damian Cianci, has been in the technology field since the late 90s and holds several industry certifications. Besides network and data systems, he's been developing and teaching successful technology based courses for nearly twenty years. He is the head of the Advanced Aerospace instructional division of The Business Training Center, as well as the Director of Technology where he oversees all IT concerns.

Class Topics:
* Each day will include labs and short lectures applicable to the exercises performed in class.
  • What is routing
  • Router components
  • Accessing the router interface
  • How and why to route data within either a small or large environment
  • Routing Protocols
  • Monitoring and maintaining your routers
  • Subnetting (IPv4 and IPv6)
  • Examining network packets
  • How switching works
  • VLANs
  • Protect your network through the use of ACLs (Access Control Lists)
  • Cisco SDM (Security Device Manager)
  • Network Address Translation
  • DHCP
  • Tunneling (VPNs)
  • IPv6 addressing and routing
  • Wireless
  • Maintaining physical network security
  • Identifying rogue network devices (Arduino, Raspbery Pi, and similar)
  • Securing the "Internet of Things"
  • Networking shop machinery
  • Industrial Safety and PPE
  • Lock Out / Tag Out
  • Supplying network connectivity to Automation Systems
  • Automation control software overview
  • PLC basics

As a final note, please be aware that our facility is a functioning industrial training environment, complete with all the noise and hazards that you'd find in any manufacturing center. All our complex labs will be performed in the shop, side by side any other students that could be working on anything from CNC machining to robotics. This may be disconcerting to some, but we hope you can see it as a very realistic impression of industrial networking and automation.
