Rigid Composite Structures  

Longboard Project
2.0 Credits


The mission of this course is to create lightweight rigid structures that can span fairly large distances, such and an airliner floor paneling, walkways, support beams and similar.

As with our other "applied" course, there is much more learned in class than what it might seem on the surface. To create a laminate product (in this case and longboard) you glue together a bunch of wood. But the reality is that we need to shape it, and this is done in CATIA, then cut out various features, and this is done on the CNC mill. Because this is a wood based product, there is an esthetic quality to it so we need to be able to sand and polish the wood to a shine. This product will also be used outside in various elements, so the wood needs to be protected. This means painting (Clear coating) and then again polished and waxed.

Finally after someone is all done with this, you might find that the product is too flexible or too rigid. This would be a waste of materials to make a bunch of bad longboards, so instead, we make several test coupons, small 24" x 3" strips, similar in construction to a longboard. We make each one with different composite materials and load test them to see which construction has the properties we're after. This means we must first discuss the properties of these materials. After this lecture and testing, students will have a much stronger understanding of what will be needed to get their desired results. This ends product being a stunning high quality composite longboard.
